After 9 years as a Gisborne District Councillor I offer my candidacy for the TDH Board.* I still have the energy and commitment to serve the community and would like to make a more concentrated effort - by 'focusing only on Health issues'.* My husband Terry and I run our own Event Management Company working mostly in the sporting industry.* We are Gisborne people who have lived here all our lives enjoying this wonderful place.* We enjoy watching people train and participate in events such as Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlons - up to riding 204km in our Gisborne to Wairoa and back - GWAloop Cycle Challenge.
Health is very much at the forefront of our lives and I would appreciate the opportunity to share my expertise in this area with local people.Website. www.tmssport.co.nz |

DESPITE announcing her retirement from the Gisborne District Council, Kathy Sheldrake is not straying far from local politics. The high-polling councillor has thrown her hat in the ring as a candidate for Tairawhiti District Health Board at October’s local body elections.Mrs Sheldrake says she has long been interested in health and how the public health service runs locally and nationally.“I have wanted to get on the health board for quite a while, but it wasn’t a quick decision to make. I did a lot of research before I put my nomination in. I talked with people involved in health and did a lot reading.“But when I saw the article in The Herald last week that outlined how many members won’t be standing this time round it confirmed my decision.“There is going to be a whole new board almost and it would be really exciting to be a part of a new-look, fresh health board.“I think we have a fantastic public health service here but there is often criticism about lack of money and funding.“I want to be involved in finding a better way of doing things. I am definitely keen to be a part of a public health system that gives great service and has amazing staff.Mrs Sheldrake says she is particularly interested in the health of older people.“I look after my own health through diet and exercise and I think that is a good philosophy. I can walk the talk and I think that’s important as a representative on the health board. I still have a lot of energy and there is more I can do for the community.”Mrs Sheldrake served three terms on the district council and has run for the health board once before. However she missed out by three places.Only one other person, current health board member Craig Bauld, has filed their nomination for the health board.© Jessica Wauchop: Reporter Gisborne Herald |
